I hadn't seen Super Robot Party, but I know the guys from 10 years ago. Matt Crow was in mytwilightpilot, and there's a definite mtp stamp on their sound, but the vocals take the band in a decidedly britpop direction, so it comes out a little like if you slowed down and then Americanized the sound of Doves. in other words, beautiful!

Super Robot Party: This new reverb-laden five piece crafts ethereal shoegaze drones, touched with tidbits of folk. The experimental mixture sounds a lot like someone's garage in 1991, heck even a blend of several garages on the street, full of kids and guitars. The Pasadena group has nearly three dozen tracks available on Soundcloud, or for the full experience, catch them tonight at Dean's with Jealous Creatures and A Sundae Drive.

Full disclosure: I had the great pleasure of mastering this record for the band.

Though at first, that might make me seem like a biased reviewer, it actually speaks

volumes for the quality of these songs that I absolutely love this album and still listen
to it regularly for pleasure. (Mastering, for those unaware, involves listening to an
album over and over and over. For me, it does anyway. So the fact that I still listen
to it all the time means a lot to me.)

There are many reasons I dig it so much. The guitar work from Matt Crow and Richard

Crandall is tastefully and deceptively simple in its approach, conveying a sense of dark
longing that reminds me sometimes of Catherine Wheel and other times bands like The
Reindeer Section or Mogwai's quieter moments. I also love the drums on this album.
It's my favorite kind of drumming - not fancy, not schmancy, but rather, powerful and
simple. Joe Scott makes his kit bring the hip-shake, and it's brought with well-timed
elegance, locking in nicely with the hook-tastic bass lines by James Gomez.

To top it all off, Tom Burke is simply a great vocalist. His voice is expressive and strong,

and it's the icing on the cake that the rest of the band has beautifully cooked up. You'll
find yourself singing along in no time. Of this, I am sure.
